Favourable Climate

Climate
  • Essentially a warm weather crop.
  • But can be grown in all types of climate.
  • Flowering and fruiting should not coincide with heavy rainfall.
Temperature
  • 20-32°C is the ideal temp. for growth.
  • Germination temp- 20-25℃.
  • It cannot withstand frost at any stage of its growth which causes slow germination, bad growth, bearing few and small ears and even dies when damaged by the frost.
Crop Water Requirements
  • Water requirement equivalent to 500-800 mm of rainfall is ideal.
  • Water requirement is more during germination and cob initiation stage.

Favourable Soil

Type
  • Best at deep fertile loam or sandy loam soil having good drainage
pH
  • Required range- 6.0 to 7.5 is ideal.

  • Put 2 seeds per hole in case of varieties, as the germination may be low.

Nutrient Management

  • Sweet corn is a heavy feeder crop. It requires manure in high quantities.

Total requirement: 48:24:16 N:P:K kg per acre.

    • At sowing apply-

    Urea- 35 kg

    Single Super Phosphate- 150 kg

    Muriate of Potash- 27 kg

    • 30 Days after sowing-

    Urea- 35 kg
